Nigel decided that, where possible, he would  produce a full, narrative work of certain breeds. Nursery Slopes is the first of these images illustrating the wonderful Bernese Mountain Dog. A large working breed originating from Switzerland, it was used by farmers as both a guard and a dray dog. They would pull small carts carrying milk churns and, presumably, anything that they needed to transport along the steep slopes of their alpine homes
